Do you find yourself being online the whole day and the whole night? You may start by researching something at Wikipedia. Afterwards, you’re chatting with your friends, checking out the Friendster and Multiply accounts of your friends and the friends of your friends.Do you just love video games? After classes, you may troop to the nearest Internet Cafe with your friends and play DOTA, RAN, Cabal or the latest online game craze. That’s just okay. We all need to take a break from the busy studies and lifestyles that we have. “All work/study and no play makes Pedro a dull boy.” so said my English teacher back in elementary. But the reverse is also true, “all play and no work/study will make Pedro’s grades and performance zero.” Heheh.Internet addiction and to online video games is very common among young people these days. They play and play as long as they have time. And even if they don’t they still play! When I was younger. I also had my share of addiction. It was the time of Counterstrike and the early days of Battle Realms and Red Alert. Those of you who no longer know these games may have been born in the late nineties or early 2000s. 😀 heheh. I ain’t that old. Those were my College days. I was brash and looking for ways to divert my time. And guess what, I wasn’t very much interested with my studies. At least not enough to get me straight A’s and high grades. I was nineteen years old and whenever I feel like it, I would go out with my friends and play. My worst experience was playing at the computer shop from nine in the morning till 9 in the evening! There were even times that I wouldn’t attend my classes in UP Diliman, just for the sake of video games. Heheh. My friends would ask me, “Mights, di ba may pasok ka ng 2:30.” And I would just reply with a grin and tell them I’ve just declared a holiday. Those were the days.I also had a housemate at Krus na Ligas near UP Diliman. He had a personal computer. A new one actually. He would play video games in his PC from dusk till dawn. I would sleep at night and he was still playing. When I woke up early the next day, he was still playing! I don’t know what happened to his classes if he ever attended them or not because I would be gone during the day.The bottom line is, by the enrolment time the next semester, his sister went to fetch him. He went back to the province without earning a degree!I just shook my head and wished his experience won’t happen to me.Let’s just say that I grew out of my video-game craze and resumed a rather normal life. I paid more attention to my classes. Studied for my recitations and my exams and before long I was on the road to graduation.I still remember graduation and the great lesson that I learned. One of my classmates asked me if I will graduate with honors (cum laude). I told her, “Me? Hahaha. How I wish!” Then she replied without any trace of sarcasm or irony, just surprise. “You could have earned honors, had you wanted it…”I told her it was too late for that. Too late indeed! So much for my addiction to video games and the Internet. Good thing, I was not into blogging during those times. hahah. I might not have graduated from College if I was addicted to blogging then.Anyway, if you let it, your addiction to video games and to the internet can lead you to a downward spiral. You might lose interest in your classes, get really bad grades and worse, you will spend lots and lots of money. There are no Rehabilitation Centers for addiction to the internet and to video games. The simple solution really is to know what you want to do and accomplish and eliminate anything that hinders you from achieving that!
